The Importance Of Special Needs Athletes During The...

Participating in the Raleigh County Special Olympics has been a positive experience that has helped me to acquire an abundance of knowledge relating to how special needs athletes perform and function. I have had very minimal experience with children with special needs, so I was a bit unsure of myself before attending the basketball skills practices. Before beginning my second level I fieldwork, I assumed the athletes would all be around the same age and would have a comparable level of skill amongst one another; however, the athletes ranged in age from young teenagers to young adults, and some athletes seemed to participate at a more advanced skill level than others. The experience far exceeded my expectations as the athletes began to improve throughout the weeks and it became very exciting to assist them in reaching their goals. Overall, the athletes had wonderful attitudes. They were patient when asked to do something and they were driven to complete the activity. Although I was pr esent to assist in teaching the athletes the basic skills of basketball, they actually taught me more than I could have imagined through their positive outlooks, patience with themselves and toward others, and their kindness in general. Many of the athletes presented with symptoms of autism spectrum disorder and it was apparent that one athlete had down syndrome. Having identified the different product phases, the study will now discuss each of the phases in turn. Introduction of Sottilette The product was introduced in 1961 and between 1961 to 1978 sottilette had to create its own market. In less than 15 years the product had recorded sales of approximately 8,000 tonnes. It initially served as a sandwitch filling and was therefore presented as a tasty and very practical cheese. The message distributed by successive advertising campaigns centered around the functionality of the product as well as its role as a food to be combined with bread. The most relevant advertisements were broadcast as follows: The product was launched in 1964 with the help of a well known Italian comedian Gino Brameri; in 190, when its first positioning was defined in terms of a â€Å"robust sandwich†; and in 1974, when the new singly wraped slice packaging was introduced. As time went on, the product was later differentiated and the range of the product was extended into three distinct flavours. The price remained relatively high since it was a new product and because there were limited or no competitors. Development of Sottilette Kraft maintained its leadership position between 1979 to 1993 following a fast growing market for sottilette. During this period the product reached a volume of sales in Italy that matched all the other European countries taken as a whole. The market growth for the product came as a result of continuous innovation and development of the product which witnessed the addition of new versions the product range enabling manufacturers and distributors to make a more extended use of the product and reposition the basic version (Sottillete Emmental) as a fully-fledged culinary ingredient for all recipes and not just as something to be eaten with bread. Another version referred to as Fila e Fondi (stretch and melt), which was particulary well suited for all over-cooked dishes was added in 1979. In the marketing campaign for Emmental (that remains the basic product), t he key benefits for consumers were shown to be versality (in terms of its good hot and cold performance), taste and the guarantee represented by the Kraft trade mark. A megabrand campaign based upon a young boy was carried out as from 1993. This was to enable Kraft capitalize on the advertising campaign carried out for the single type brands. In addition to the basic message that reflected the superior quality of the product, guaranteed by the experience of Kraft, different messages where added on a case-by-case basis such as Emmental (â€Å"superior taste†), Fila e Fondi (â€Å"suitable for hot dishes†), and Light (â€Å"only 16% fat content†). Advertising investments were supplemented by promotion-type initiatives based on the collection of points designed to increase customer loyalty and favour heavy users and the price remained 30-35% relatively higher than competitive brands. Figure 1: Sottillete’s Market Share in 1992 Source: Pratesi[1] Crises for sottilette Sottilette witnessed tremendous crises in 1994 as a result of a number of factors which include the following: A period of economic recession; Consumers developed an approach to food consumption where quality and price relationships where properly evaluated; There was an introduction of hard discount into the market and low-price competition (modern distribution’s reaction to the challenge of hard discount) doubled the sales of unbranded products; The devaluation of the Italian lira resulting into an increase in prices of foreign-sourced inputs; The foregoing resulted in the collapse of the existing market (taking into consideration the fact that hard discount was a closed market for branded products). In addition other adverse conditions included the following: A fall in the market share of sottilette Kraft by 4%; Decrease in sales volume; Decrease in profit owing to low-price competition and high import cost following local currency depreciation. Figure 1 above show the development of the sottilette market and its direct competitors in 1992. One can observe that the market share of the sottilette brand was very high in 1992 while it witnessed a fall in 1995. Sottilette’s market share in 1992 was 55.8% and that of competitor brands was 44.2% as shown in figure 1. Following the crises period, sottillette’s market share fell from 55.8% in 1992 to 51.9% in 1995. It should also be noted that low price products had a market share of 7.5%, hard discount products a market share of 9.6%, private labels 8.9% and other brands a market share of 22.1%. Figure 3 below shows the sales trend of the sottillette brand. One can observe that the brand has gone through 4 phases: introduction; development; crises; and reaction. From 1961 and 1969 the brand witnessed a constant growth in sales volume from 0 to about 8,000 tonnes. The sales volume remained constant at 8,000 tonnes between the period1969 and 1977. During the develo pment phase that began in 1969, the sales at first remained constant at 8,000 tonnes. Following the megabrand communication campaign, the sales began rising again and by 1983 the sales figure had reached 15,000 tonnes. Between 1983 and 1993, the sale volume continued rising despite slight fluctuations and by 1993 the volume stood at about 18,000 tonnes. The crises period witnessed a drop in the sales volume from about 18,000 tonnes in 1993 to about 16,000 tonnes in 1994 representing an 11% drop in the volume during this period. Figure 2: Sottillette Trend of Sales (Tonnes) Source: Pratesi[2] Reaction to Crises Kraft Food’s reaction to the crises was the adoption of a strategy that concentrated upon a more aggressive marketing mix along side low price products and hard discounts in an attempt to win back customers and consolidate the loyalty of existing customers. Prices which were 50% above other brands were reduced by 20% and a new advertising message that ex plained in a rational manner the superior quality of Sottilette Emmental was launched. The new advertising campaign took the form of two commercials in which one was aimed at addressing brand products and the other aimed at hard discount and low-price products. The aim was to consolidate the loyalty of existing customers and eliminate the shift towards competitive brands that provided cheaper products. The commercials were aimed at providing a rational justification for the premium price of the Sottilette brand in terms of its superior taste and better culinary properties. This was justified by the product’s ingredients (100% Emmental Bavaria). Following the aggressive strategy, the Sottilette brand witnessed positive results as its sales volume which had exhibited a dramatic decline during the 1994 crises immediately increased by 10%. Profitability also witnessed a significant increase and sustained increase. Since the campaign focused much attention on the basic version of the Sottilette brand Emmental, the other versions of the brand including: Flia e Fondi; and Light were penalised because they were not sustained by the campaign. This resulted in decrease in their sales volumes. In a nutshell, Sottilette’s overall market share increased by 2% in 1995 and the increase continued in 1996 following increased investments in communication for the entire product range. From figure 3 above one can observe that following the reaction phase, the sottillete brand witnessed an increase in sales volume from about 16,000 tonnes in 1994 to 17,000 tonnes in 1996. Current Situation. Direct Competition. The main competitors in the cheese slice market constitute five main groups including: Sottilette: this is the market leader with a market share of above 50 per cent. other branded products including Tostine by Invernizza (which is also part of the Kraft Jacobs Suchard Group), Bel Paese and Grill by Galbani, Miette by Locatelli and Tigre. This group accounts for 18% of the cheese market share. Private Labels: These include products of large retail chains. For example, Coop. This group maintains a 20-30% lower prices than branded products. Together, they constitute a market share of 10% and have been witnessing a sustainable growth rate. Low price products: they include unbranded low-price products sold in modern distribution chains. Their market share following a strong growth in the period 1994-1995 has witnessed a considerable drop by 50% and now levels at 4%. Hard Discount Products: Hard discount products refer to unbranded cheese slices sold at very advantageous prices in eponymous chains (for example, Lidl). Their development moves in perfect lock-step with the spread of hard discount stores, while their market share has stabilized at 12%. Consumption. There are over 16million consumers of cheese slices representing over 80% of all Italian Families. 20% of all families acquire about 50% of the Sottilatte brand. Among the sottilatte customers representing 75% of all consumers of cheese slices one can further break them down as follows: 25% who consume exclusively Sottilatte; 44% who alternate between Sottilatte and low-priced products; and 31% who alternate between Sottilatte and other branded products. In general among the consumers of cheese slices there are those who never use any other type pf cheese in cooking (about 20% of the total) and those who alternate between these and other products that are regarded as being capable of performing the same culinary functions including: 8% that also make use of Emmental; 27% that use mozzarella; and 63% that use not only slices but also Emmental and Mozzarella. According to a 1996 market survey on cheese slice purchasers (over 90% women) using cl uster analysis techniques four different groups of consumers were identified including: Critics – 26%; Ambivalent – 19%; The Serene – 32%; and The Disenchanted – 23%. Critics represent consumers who generally have a negative perception towards the entire category of cheese slices. They have the belief that the product is wholly artificial and thus tend to use them as sparingly as possible. They are young, of high school age and generally do not live in the south. The ambivalent are women who are not completely convinced that branded products have a better quality than unbranded products but however appreciate the practicality of sliced cheeses. They belong to a medium-to-low social class, live in the northeast with large families. They are light users of the category of cheese slices and adopt a relatively positive attitude towards the uncooked uses of the product. The serene represent brand loyal consumers who are convinced that high priced products represent the inherent quality of the products. They mainly like the use of the slices for cold dishes and for certain special recipes. They include middle-class women who often live in the south with part-time jobs and they are heavy users of the category of cheese slices. The disenchanted alternate between different brands and choose the brands in accordance to how each brand suits their particular needs. They adopt a positive attitude towards private labels and greatly appreciate the functionality of the product. They are young, resident in the northeast with small families but without children. They have full-time jobs and are medium users of the cheese slice category. They have no negative attitude towards using the product for uncooked dishes. Appendix. The perspective that can be identified from the above case study is centred on two strategic perspectives, which include the resource-based view and the innovation strategy. According to the resource based view, valuable, rare, inimitable, and non-substitutable resources make it possible for a firm to develop and maintain competitive advantage and also to use this competitive advantage and resources to a chieve superior performance by generating superior profits which in turn create superior shareholder value for the shareholders[3]. Application of the resource based view to marketing can be achieved with the help of identifying resources that are both marketing specific (that is, generated and leveraged in part through marketing activities) and potentially manifest at least some of the desired attributes of the resource-based view (i.e., appear to be difficult to imitate, are rare, non-substitutable, etc)[4]. One can see from the case that Kraft Foods had such resources in its Sottilatte brand given that it could maintain competitive advantage for a very long time and even during the crises period it was still possible for the company to adjust to the situation and continue as the market leader. The ability of Kraft to define the rational quality of the Emmental brand following low price competition reflects Kraft Foods possession of resources that are difficult to imitate by compe titors. Given that the Sottilatte brand still has a market share above 50% in the market for cheese slices is also a reflection of the company’s possession of resources that are difficult to imitate by competitors. The resources have also been leveraged through its aggressive marketing campaign and its continued investments in advertising and brand communication. This has enabled the company to consolidate its existing customers while trying to attract and maintain new customers. Innovation refers to a situation whereby a company tries to differentiate its products in such a way as to provide value to customers that cannot be matched by competitors to enable it to maintain competitive advantage[5]. Kraft has been trying to innovate as can been seen from the introduction of different versions of the Sottilatte brand such as the Fila e Fondi, which was well suited for over-cooked dishes, and Light with low fat contents. Providing different versions of the brand enabled diffe rent customer segments (for example, those who did not love too much fat) to at least find a product that could suit their particular needs at any given point in time. This strategy paid off given that it further widened the customer base, sales volume and thus profit during the development phase of the brand. However, the company failed to properly communicate the additional versions of the brand during the crises period and thus witnessed falling sales volumes. This was later corrected as it increased investments in marketing and communication of all the brand versions as well as their different attributes to consumers in a bit to consolidate existing customers and enroll new ones. She doesn’t know this, but she changed my life. She was there for me when it seemed like no one else was. When most of my friends were dissolving around me and I just didn’t feel like I could do anything right, she was there, and she made everything seem okay. It didn’t matter that I was inevitably going to graduate with a GPA a tenth of a point lower than I wanted, or that my director told me that he was disappointed in me because I just didn’t seem focused lately, or that my other friends just weren’t talking to me anymore. It didn’t matter because she was there and she made me feel safe. She’s my best friend, and I love her and admire her for so many different reasons. Government: this word is used to define the system that maintains the state and her people. This system is run by officials who, hopefully, have the nation’s best interest at heart; but these best interests for a country often find themselves conflicting in their particular perspectives. In Brave New World, the World Controllers have implemented human conditioning and predestination, these methods have indeed assured them that they operate within the nation’s best interest. In fact, one can say that by brainwashing the people they have stolen control and not earned it, and the ‘utopia’ in Brave New World can be defined as a controlled dictatorship. This is but another example of how the State has failed the people. Any ruler worth his salt must first earn the respect, or alternatively fear, of his subjects in order to reign successfully. Respect earns the ruler the trust of the people: this trust then allows for orderly conduct amongst the citizens of the country. Earning respect can be achieved by conducting one’s self honorably and proving one’s capabilities. Huxley presents another technique of acquiring respect by employing â€Å"hypnopaedia† as means of earning respect and gaining control over the nation. â€Å"Of course they don’t. How can they? They don’t know what it’s like being anything else. We’d mind, of course. But then we’ve been differently conditioned. Besides, we start with a different heredity†(Huxley,5). Brave New World’s Henry foster shows us how conditioning effects a person’s values. The citizens do not respect the controllers, they merely adhere to the rules. Though this does not mean that they are dissatisfied, in actual fact they have no sense of dissatisfaction unless it stands opposed to their hypnopaedic prejudice. â€Å"What a hideous colour khaki is,† remarked Lenina, voicing the hypnop? ic prejudices of her caste†(Huxley,4). Essentially what Huxley has wrought is a world of mindless drones with no sense of self, which is quite possibly the worse outcome for mankind, to become enslaved by a system they created and lost control over. There is one major variable that needs to be considered in keeping order in a nation. People cha nge, things change, nothing will ever remain the same for long, and a good government should be as adaptable as the people. If one is to properly maintain order, one must be able to conform with society and trends. These changes and trends are how mankind has learned and developed, and will continue to do so. As stated, government or those in power, must too be able to move forward or to risk losing control and becoming obsolete. This is quite possibly the biggest flaw in Huxley’s Brave New World: mankind now controls and predestines the people that inhabit their world, and the price for this control has become progress. A society built on the basis of ‘Community, Identity, Stability’ will never be able to face the ever changing, fickle nature of humanity. In order to preserve control they must therefore eliminate evolution. They have stolen evolution’s format: the world and mankind will forever be stuck in the small cage of Brave New World, and in essence this eliminates anything that is truly either brave or new. In conclusion, it is safe to say that Huxley’s utopia went about achieving its status in the wrong way. Mankind has lost its free will to the controlling powers of a system. This system cannot be called government, as it is more akin in characteristics to slavery. Man no longer has freewill and order is kept not through respect and intellect, but via degeneration nd conduct. The former sections of this essay present strategies and techniques used to maintain order in a society of individuals. Finally, it may be argued that the Brave New World protects society by locking them in a cage of ignorance; however, this is at the cost of freedom, and this is unacceptable. Mankind needs be free in order to progress as has been explained. Protection is all well and good but not at the cost of freedom: humans must be free to make mistakes in order to evolve, grow and create. Societal order must still be maintained, but not abused. Those in charge are well within their right to impose laws and rules, as long as these laws keep within a reasonable parameter. Protection is one thing, enslavement is another; if protection must come at the cost of freedom then it is not worth it, and I am sure that those in Brave New World, if given the chance, would choose freedom. Huxley’s utopia is a future that we should hope is never realized, it would bring us to ruin. If we must place faith in those in control, let us hope that they possess the qualities presented in this essay, and have the ability to lead a world of free people forward and beyond. Review Of Lterature Essay Part I: Introduction and Chapter 1 Introduction Dostoevsky introduces Part I of Notes from Underground. He tell us that in this first portion, the protagonist will introduce himself and explain the causes that led to his appearance before us in this text. He then explains that the subseque nt extract, Apropos of the Wet Snow, will record the protagonists own notes. Summary The Underground Man starts off by telling us that he has liver disease, but refuses to go to a doctor out of spite. He realizes that he hurts only himself by doing this, but even so he remains obstinately opposed to seeking proper medical attention. He tells us that he is now forty years old, a former civil servant, rude and bitter. He then immediately retracts his statement, saying he was actually not rude at all. He scoffs at us, the readers of his Notes, insisting that he does not care what w e think of him. The Underground Man goes on to explain why he became spiteful, saying that only fools go far in this world, and intelligent men like himself face failure inevitably. After assuring us that he is not writing for our amusement, he describes his current mis erable situation. He lives in his corner, where he has bunkered down since quitting the Civil Service upon receiving a large inheritance from a wealthy relative. He has a gruesome dim room with a maidservant he despises. The St. Petersburg weather ag gravates his health, but he does not careit makes no difference to him whether he stays or goes. Finally, he invites himself to tell us more about himself, as any decent gentlemen likes to do. Commentary The Underground Mans spiteful refusal to see a doctor resounds throughout the text. The terms nihilistic and masochistic have often been applied to the Underground Man (heretofore referred to as the UM). Nihilism is a repudiation of societal values, and masochism is the deliberate infliction of pain on oneself, usually for pleasure. The UMs hatred of society in general and his own powerlessness somehow combine to make it pleasurable for him to hurt himself , perhaps since he cannot harm soc iety as a wholehis helpless resentment of the external world leads him to attack himself, to shake up his inner world. The UM does not invariably turn against himself, however: we will also see him transfer this humiliation and shame onto others, play ing the role of humiliated and humiliateSt. Petersburg is also introduced in this chapter; although it may not be mentioned that much from here on in, it is important to view the city as a central character in the text (see the section on St. Petersburg for a discussion of the setting). The UMs self-consciousness, his constant analysis and revision of his own thoughts and words, is one of the most distinctive elements of the Notes. The UM is very aware, not only of our presence as readers (he constantly addresses us), but of our presence as judges. Thus, we must question the UMs sincerity every time he insists that he is not here for our amusement, or that he doesnt give a damn. The alienation that the UM feels is central to many of Dostoevskys most famous characters, and is not an indication of insanity so much as a failure to deal with the impossibility of life in St. Petersburg. It is telling that the UM, like many of Dostoe vskys other characters, is a low-ranking Civil Servant. My Job at the Amusement Park Essay In the summer of 2008, I had promoted from 8th grade and was about to make a transition to high school. At the age of fifteen, my only concern was trying to figure out how I was going to do at a new school, however, my mother had other plans for me. She decided that it was time for me to get a job. My mother was considered more as a single mom at the time. Even though our stepdad was existent, he didnt really do much to help out with having us grow unless it was for personal gain. My mother also functioned in a similar way. She didnt want me to work solely for the work experience but rather for her to get some financial help out of me as well. At the time, I was a very quiet girl who kept to herself. I stuck to reading romantic novels and listening to my music while I was swinging in our neighborhood park rather than conversing with others. Dont get me wrong, I did have friends but I preferred to be more to myself; an introvert. So as the topic arose, naturally I presumed that based on my personality, my mother would consider having me apply to places where I could do what is necessary and not have to socialize with the customers such as retail stores or fast food restaurants; Places where people were too consumed into buying product rather than taking the time to acknowledge that you were just as human as they are. Of course, your parents always do what is more convenient for them, if not yours, mine definitely didnt think on my behalf. Coincidently, the next day after my 8th grade promotion, Californias Great America was holding a job fair. When my mother wanted me to get a job at an amusement park, I was astounded, outraged, and extremely resilient to attending the job fair. I did not want to go at all. My exact response was, ARE YOU CRAZY! I DONT WANT TO WORK AT GREAT AMERICA. WHY CANT I JUST WORK AT THE MALL?   and she said, Whats the big deal? Its only a job fair. Besides, youre not going to be doing much. You could just apply for the rides associate position and press buttons all day. When I took a glimpse through her looking glass of the whole situation, I admitted that I may have over exaggerated and agreed to go. As we drove to the job fair, I was praying not to get the job. We arrived to the Great America and the first thing I noticed was that it was packed. Floods of people were there as if they giving away free trips to Disney Land. You could tell that people had the look of greed in their eyes, ready to get out there, get their hands dirty and bring home the cash. I, however, was not one of those. I was one of the few teenagers there who were filling out the application and taking a glance back at their mother with the facial expression that said, Please, please dont make me do this,   every few minutes and being scolded to hurry up so they can go on with their lives. It took us two hours for someone to come and assist us with the filled out application. I was ready to just go through with the interview and get the whole situation dealt and over with when suddenly, they tell my mother that I cant go for the rides position. The gentleman had politely told my mother, Because she is a minor and is not over the age of 16, she is not allowed to work for rides. You have 30 seconds to decide whether she wants to work for the foods department or games.   At that moment, I went in panic mode. I didnt do well in situations where I was 1) timed and 2) pressured into doing when I didnt want to do it to begin with. As soon as I told the gentlemen from HR that I wanted the games associate position, he placed me outside on a table to wait for a manager to interview me. As I was waiting, patiently for the manager to arrive, my palms were clamming up, my breath was irregular as if I was catching my breath from being under water for a long time, and tapping my feet excessively as if my feet were attempting to escape from my body and get me out of this whole mess I got myself into. Without further ado to my panic attack, the games department manager Charlie had finally arrived. Charlie was this Pilipino gentleman who was about 52. He was wearing a collared, maroon, short-sleeved shirt with two thick vertical white lines, one each side of his torso that went from his shoulder to the bottom of his shirt and navy blue shorts that were jean-like material and went up to his knees. He was a really strong looking man with his broad shoulders and his muscular calves. But, he also had a really round stomach that look like he ate a huge bowling ball, the size of a boulder. With that being said, he had on some square glasses that made him look like he was a smart man and had a smile that made you feel comforting and welcome as he approached to greet you. Once Charlie was done making his introductions and telling me what my job description were going to consist of, he started asking me personal questions that I never anticipated people would ask you during a job interview such as: what kind of hobbies do you have? Or how well do you do when it comes to talking in front of people; Public speaking. It was one of the few things that I never really took the time to explore only because I wasnt a very talkative person from the start. I told Charlie, Well, I have a few friends here and there but Im not the type of person who likes to draw attention to myself.   He then asked me, Would you announce on a microphone or talk in front of people if you had to? Heres what Ill do, Im going to tell you to advertise for a game called Lucky Cup in front of this crowd (The people who were outside waiting in line at the job fair). Think of a way of how you could attract people to come to your kiosk. I completely laughed in his face and said; Wait  ¦ are you serious? he just nodded and then explained to me what the game was all about. Lucky Cup was a game where people had to buy a certain amount of plastic balls and throw them at cups. There were clear cups, purple cups, and red cups. If you got the ball in the clear cup, you didnt win anything. The purple cups got you a small toy, and the red cups got you a giant toy. In 2008, people were still hyped about PokÃÆ' ©mon and Sonic the Hedgehog.
